VIDEO | 2018 ITU World cup season gets underway in Cape Town

Henri Schoeman returns to racing for first time after doping allegations last month

Olympians Richard Murray (RSA) and Vicky Holland (GBR) took the wins at the first ITU World Cup of the year in Cape Town, South Africa on the weekend. The sprint distance race was the kick-off for many of the top ITU athletes’ seasons. It was no surprise to see Murray as the repeat champion on the men’s side at his hometown race, and for Holland, the Rio 2016 bronze medallist, this was the first race back after being sidelined from injury for a while, but proved she was back to top form.

This was also the first race for South Africa’s Henri Schoeman since his name made international headlines last month when a report was leaked suggesting he had failed a doping test at the Rio Olympic Games. Schoeman responded to allegations in a short message that left many questions unanswered, but he was not banned from competition at all. Schoeman took second behind Murray.
