Tyler Mislawchuk continues top 15 streak at WTS Leeds

Tyler Mislawchuk continues to demonstrate he is in the mix with the world’s elite after his fourth top-15 finish this year with a 14th-place result as the World Triathlon Series resumed in Leeds, UK on Sunday.
Regrouping over the last month after a busy schedule to start the 2016 season, the Oak Bluff, Man. resident maintained pace with the majority of the field in a large chase pack throughout the 1.5-kilometre swim, 40-kilometre bike course and 10-kilometre run. A typical day in England with light rain, Mislawchuk clocked a time of 1:53:14 to finish as the top Canuck in the first ever World Triathlon Series race in Leeds, UK.

“I came to Leeds with the idea of putting a solid effort in to see how I would fair,” said Mislawchuk, who took some down time after the Yokohama race, which capped off a challenging Olympic qualification period.
“The course in Leeds was quite challenging with a hill right out of transition, and a very technical small, narrow loop. The crowds were massive today and I received a surprising amount of cheers.”
Steadily climbing up the international standings into eighth overall, the 21-year-old Mislawchuk also has two 10ths and an 11th-place result this year.
“To climb to the next level I need to continue nailing the basic processes in my day to day training,” added Mislawchuk.
Much of the support was for the obvious race favourites, Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee, who were raised in the town of Leeds.
The Brownlee brothers didn’t disappoint the hometown faithful. Riding in a lead pack of four on the bike course while leaving the rest of the world chasing in a group of 24 strong, the Brownlees were in complete control while charging through their childhood streets.
When foot hit the pavement, it was the two brothers darting into the lead and not looking back. When all was said and done Alistair grabbed his first World Triathlon Series race of the season after clocking-in at 1:49:27. Jonathan Brownlee finished just over 30 seconds off the leading pace in second with a time of 1:49:59. Australia’s Aaron Royle held strong to win the bronze medal with a time of 1:50:33.
A Canadian rookie on the World Triathlon Series, Xavier Grenier-Talavera, enjoyed his best ever finish against the top triathletes on the planet. The 21-year-old from Vaudreuil, Que., chalked up a solid 22nd-place showing with a time of 1:54:08.
Quebec’s Alexis Lepage finished 27th at 1:54:59. Calgary’s Russell Pennock did not finish the race.
No Canadian women started in Leeds.
