We hope that tomorrow you will be fixed to a screen, or, if you are here, joining us on the edge of the canal, along Woodlands Parkway, in Hippie Hollow, and at the finish line in Waterway Square Place for what promises to be an unforgettable day of racing.
If the expectations hold, this could become one of the truly legendary race days in our sport. So let’s take it in while it’s happening.
The Bikes Are Racked, The Stage Is Set
We spent four hours in the pro transition area as athletes racked their bikes – machines meticulously prepared and fine-tuned for what may be the most iconic race day of the season so far.

The energy was unmistakable, and the pro panel yesterday captured that anticipation perfectly. For contrast, in Oceanside just three weeks ago, there were still empty seats. Here in Texas, the room was not big enough. Every seat was filled, with spectators lining the back walls, there to hear from their favourite athletes and to catch a moment with the stars of our sport, who generously gave their time.

Normally, in a pre-race preview, we would highlight which male and female athletes are the favourites. Not this time. In our view, there are no outright favourites in either race. Main attractions, certainly.
You have the Norwegians with Solveig, Casper, Kristian, and Gustav. A quick note here, there are two other Norwegians in the men’s field, Marius and Ole-Bernard. There’s Kat Matthews, PTN open rank number one and a three-time champion here. Patrick Lange, a three-time Ironman World Champion and past winner in Texas. Jelle Geens, a two-time Ironman 70.3 World Champion making his full-distance debut. Taylor Knibb, ranked second by the PTO and PTN, undefeated this season with wins on the Gold Coast and in Oceanside. And for Canadians, fan favourite Lionel Sanders lines up in pursuit of a Kona qualifying slot.

At the pro panel, each athlete had something fresh to share, which made the entire Q&A engaging, humorous, and insightful.
The room laughed when Kat Matthews admitted, without hesitation, that she does not exactly love this race. “I actually think I hate this race…love The Woodlands,” the reigning champion said. “What draws me back every time is this idea to prove to myself that I can beat this course and own it… It’s a mixed bag of feelings. I want to beat my demons.”

Sitting next to Kat, Solveig Løvseth brimmed with championship confidence. She shared that since transitioning to long-distance racing, she has begun to “really enjoy the racing part of things now.” Without missing a beat, Matthews leaned in and whispered that winning helps.

Kristian Blummenfelt, the returning champion, was direct: “I feel success here in Texas is getting 5,000 points.” He added that the race will likely be faster this year, expecting it to come down to the final 5 or 10 kilometres on the run.

For Casper Stornes, the spotlight has grown following his Ironman World Championship win in 2025, but his mindset has not changed. “The pressure on myself is still the same. I want to perform and I want to win.”

The 2024 and 2025 Ironman 70.3 World Champion, Jelle Geens, has a real chance to replicate what Patrick Lange achieved in 2016, winning here in Texas in his Ironman debut. It would be a very tall order, but the Belgian made it clear that this type of challenge is exactly what motivates him, stating: “I live for the races where you compete against the best in the world.”

For Jackie Hering, her mantra, “run what you brung,” applies to every athlete, professional or amateur. The idea is simple. Do not wish for anything to be different. Do not wish your training had gone differently or that you had different equipment. Show up with what you have, and focus on doing what you can do.

For those watching, whether from home or along the course, this is the kind of race you do not look away from. Because in a field like this, you are not just watching a winner emerge. You are watching the sport at its absolute best.
