Ironman Texas: On the Ground in The Woodlands

THE WOODLANDS, TXTriathlon Magazine is on the ground for what is likely the most competitive Ironman race ever assembled outside of a world championship event. With eight world champions set to toe the start line this Saturday, it’s a showdown triathlon fans have been waiting for.

On site, the energy is immediate and unmistakable. Today, we visited the Ironman Village, where age-group athletes attended pre-race briefings and moved through the always-busy expo. The afternoon continued with the pro panel at the Marriott – an event open to both media and fans.

Watching world champions pause for photos, conversations, and genuine interactions with athletes and spectators alike was a reminder of what sets this sport apart. The accessibility of triathlons’ top athletes, and their willingness to give back to the community, is something unmatched in other professional sports.

The pro panel also delivered its share of humour, with some fan favourites being candid about their relationship with racing in The Woodlands.

As Kat Matthews put it, “I hate this race…love The Woodlands, and the community of people here. I think what draws me back every time is this need to prove to myself that I can beat this course and own it… It’s a mixed bag of feelings… I want to beat my demons, as such.”

Taylor Knibb echoed the sentiment, laughing as she shared: “Last year I came here, not in a great place, and I left thinking I never want to come back…I ended up back here.”

Despite these comments, Ironman Texas has repeatedly been recognized in the Ironman Athlete’s Choice Awards, with the run course in particular earning a reputation as one of the most engaging and best-supported in North America.

If one thing is clear, the competition is fierce and the energy already electric. More to come from on the ground in the Woodlands!
