Ironman and Challenge Roth Expand the Pro Draft Zone to 20 Metres

Ironman

Just this morning, Ironman announced that the professional draft zone distance will be increased to 20m. The change will apply across all Ironman and Ironman 70.3 professional races, while the draft zone for age-group racing will remain unchanged at 12m.

How This Change Came to Be

Ironman began formal draft zone testing in June 2025 in partnership with RaceRanger and aerodynamics expert Marc Graveline. The objective of this testing was to establish baseline aerodynamic data by measuring individual coefficients of aerodynamic drag (CdA) in controlled race-like conditions.

A group of professional athletes completed multiple test runs at Ironman 70.3 race pace and power, riding at draft distances of 12m, 16m, and 20m. This approach allowed for direct comparisons across distances under consistent conditions.

According to Ironman, the results delivered clear and actionable findings. At professional racing speeds, aerodynamic benefits were significantly reduced when the draft distance increased from 12m to 20m. Ironman also noted that continued increases in professional racing speeds over time further support the move to a longer draft zone in order to uphold the intent of non-drafting rules.

As Scott DeRue, CEO of the Ironman Group, said: “When we began our research in mid-2025, our goal was to move beyond opinion and invest in principled and rigorous testing that could provide us with the objective insights needed to make a sound decision for the future of the sport.”

“The data produced through this process delivered clear insights that a 20m draft zone meaningfully impacts race dynamics in the ways that uphold the integrity of our sport,” he continued. “Based on those findings, we are confident this change represents the right next step for the evolution of fair and competitive racing at the professional level.”

The Pathway to Implementation and Continued Evaluation

Ironman has indicated that additional aerodynamic testing across a range of race conditions is planned throughout the 2026 season, alongside continued collection of athlete feedback. However, the data gathered to date was deemed sufficiently conclusive to implement the change now, with the new 20m draft zone taking effect on March 1, 2026.

Operational details related to the expanded draft zone, including time allowed to complete a pass, will be communicated in advance through the 2026 Ironman Competition Rules. Ironman has also confirmed that it will continue expanding the use of RaceRanger across professional events to support enforcement and fair competition.

“Our responsibility is to apply what we learn in a way that is fair, consistent, and operationally sound,” DeRue said. “This change reflects our long-term commitment to data- and research-based decision making and to continually improve the racing experience for our athletes.”

Challenge Roth Follows Suit

Datev Challenge Roth has also announced an identical change, increasing the professional draft distance to 20m at its flagship event. The updated rule will take effect at the 2026 edition of the race, aligning Roth with Ironman’s revised professional draft standards.
