Gwen Jorgensen blazes fast 5K in first race since giving birth

Jorgensen takes second behind Emily Infield at Husky Classic

Racing an indoor 5,000m for the first time in nine years, 2016 Olympic triathlon champion Gwen Jorgensen improved her PB over that distance by 37 seconds on Friday evening in Seattle. The Husky Classic marked her first race in more than a year and since she gave birth in mid-August 2017.

Racing unattached – meaning without a shoe or apparel contract – Jorgensen ran 15:15.64, currently the second-fastest time in the world in 2018, behind Emily Infeld’s 15:15.52, the winner of the Husky Classic at the Dempsey Indoor Centre.

The former triathlete has big goals in the next few years. In November, Jorgensen announced that she is focused on the 2020 Olympic marathon with the gold medal in mind. The American has a lifetime best for the marathon of 2:41, which she set in her debut, New York City in 2016.
