Frodeno punches Kona ticket with Ironman Austria win

The two time Ironman world champion returns to Kona fora three-peat this October.

World champion Jan Frodeno is headed back to the Big Island after validating his qualification with a win at Ironman Austria this morning.

The German star received lots of attention leading up to this morning’s race as he had initially been going for the Ironman brand world record, but was derailed with a bad flu for weeks leading up to the race and set a new goal of just needing to validate. He was cheered down the finish line by the many fans at Ironman Austria and is now focused on earning his third consecutive Kona victory this October.

Despite not being in top form, Frodeno broke eight hours easily, clocking splits of 46:29, 4:19:45 and 2:46:09 for a total time of 7:57:20.

We’ll have more updates from the race including Canadian results up soon.
