Challenge Opens Its Season This Weekend With a Unique Race Experience and the Largest Middle-Distance Pro Field Ever
A distinctive venue and strong pro field headline Challenge Family’s season opener.
Challenge Family
Challenge Sir Bani Yas will open the Challenge Family season this weekend, setting the tone for 2026 with one of the most distinctive events on the global triathlon calendar. Set on a protected island off the coast of Abu Dhabi, the race blends elite competition with an athlete experience that pushes well beyond the boundaries of a conventional race weekend. From logistics to landscape, the event has been designed to feel immersive, intentional, and unmistakably different.
What Makes This Race Experience Stand Out?
The most distinctive feature is a dedicated race cruise package that serves as optional athlete transportation to the start line and accommodation, while also doubling as the race village. Athletes can board the cruise ship at Abu Dhabi Port and sail directly to Sir Bani Yas Island, with the ship functioning as a floating hotel and centralized athlete community.
Challenge Family CEO Jort Vlam describes the concept as a defining feature of the race. “Once again, Challenge Sir Bani Yas will make triathlon history, this year with the all-inclusive race village and floating hotel onboard the cruise ship. There is no other athlete experience like it.”
The uniqueness of the event extends beyond the cruise concept. Sir Bani Yas Island is one of the eight Al Dhafra desert islands, yet it offers far more than arid scenery. Sweeping beaches, wildlife reserves, and uninterrupted coastal views shape every leg of the race, creating an experience that feels equally suited to high-performance racing and a destination getaway.

Top Pros Toeing the Line
The 2026 edition of Challenge Sir Bani Yas will also feature the largest professional field in Challenge Family history for a middle-distance race. A total of 57 men and 33 women are registered to compete for a share of the 60,000 USD prize purse.
On the men’s side, defending champion Jonathan Guisolan returns wearing race bib number one. He will face strong competition from Jonas Schomburg, currently ranked ninth in the PTO World Rankings, and Pieter Heemeryck, who continues his return to top form after a bike accident disrupted the early part of his 2025 season. Kieran Lindars, Andreas Dreitz, Henri Schoeman, and Thomas Bishop also headline a deep field.

On the women’s side, the race marks a notable middle-distance debut for Jolien Vermeylen, who finished eighth in the World Triathlon rankings. Her transition to the distance will be tested immediately against a strong and experienced field.
Ellie Salthouse, currently ranked fifteenth in the PTO World Rankings, arrives after a fourth-place finish at the T100 Triathlon World Championship Final in Qatar. Natalie Van Coevorden enjoyed a standout 2025 season, recording three middle-distance wins and two second-place finishes, including podium performances at Ironman 70.3 Bahrain and Ironman 70.3 Langkawi. Fenella Langridge also lines up after surgery in 2025, using Sir Bani Yas as the opening race of her 2026 campaign.
While the professionals compete over the middle distance, Challenge Sir Bani Yas also offers long-distance, middle-distance, and Olympic-distance racing for age-group athletes, alongside a range of community events that reflect Challenge Family’s emphasis on inclusive and memorable race experiences.
