Breaking: Ironman 70.3 Versailles Cancelled Amid Heat Wave
The inaugural event, which sold out within hours, has been cancelled following a decision by local authorities amid extreme heat.

Ironman 70.3 Versailles was a new addition to the Ironman calendar for 2026 that drew media attention due to the immediate sellout upon registration earlier this year. To say it was a highly anticipated race would be an understatement.
Yet the third heat wave in the region has forced an unexpected cancellation, with the call made by the Yvelines prefecture.
For the past handful of days, concerns about the race progressing as planned had been brewing. This was due not only to the weather forecast, but also about a reported cyanobacteria issue, which threatened the need to cancel the swim portion and proceed with individual time trial starts on the bike.
As Ironman communicated to athletes just yesterday:
The Château de Versailles has informed us of a cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) bloom in the reservoir where the swim is scheduled to take place. We are closely monitoring the situation and conducting ongoing water quality testing. If water quality does not improve, it could affect our ability to safely hold the swim portion of the event. Should the swim be cancelled, the bike leg will instead begin with an individual time trial start. Further details about how this format would operate will be communicated by email once a final decision has been made, based on the official results of the water quality analyses.
The cancellation of this highly-anticipated event, again so close to race day when a significant proportions of participants have likely already travelled and invested significant funds, is undoubtedly a disappointment, yet athlete safety cannot be ignored.
