Asics Gel Nimbus reviewed

Firm yet fast, the Asics Gel Nimbus is a neutral shoe with plenty of support that works as a long run, light run or even longer distance racing shoe.

Almost in its 20th year, the Gel Nimbus as been one of Asics’ flagship shoes, a go-to model for those looking for a neutral shoe that offers lots of cushioning and support. For lighter triathletes it can serve as an excellent shoe for longer and easier runs, while heavier multisport athletes have typically found the Nimbus to be a great option for longer races.

The latest interation, the Gel Nimbus 19, offers a lot of the same features fans of this model have come to love – excellent support, lots of cushioning thanks to the rear and forefoot gel pads and a ComforDry X-40 sockliner that is great at wicking moisture and provides lots of breathability.

One aspect that has changed, though, is the general feel of the Nimbus 19. This version of the Nimbus uses Asics’ new FlyteFoam technology, which firms up the ride appreciably. While there is still a layer of traditional EVA in the midsole, much of the midsole is made of FlyteFoam, a new material Asics has developed. It’s much lighter than traditional EVA or polyurethane fibres, but provides more cushioning and durability. There might be more cushioning in the shoe, but it does feel firmer than previous versions. That firm feel adds an extra dimension to the Nimbus 19 – it feels a bit lighter than the 315 g it weighs  and it also seems to be a bit easier to move at a quicker pace in the shoe, making this a bit more of a racing option for those looking for a supportive shoe to use on race day. The seamless, comfortable sockliner adds to that option, too – throw on a pair of lace locks and those who need a more supportive and cushioned flat could easily have the Nimbus 19 sitting in T2.

If you like to have a few different shoes for different types of runs, the Nimbus 19 can serve your option for longer runs and easy training days. Asics has even gone so far as to provide gender-specific cushioning (women’s models feature a lower-density top layer in the midsole and slightly more drop from heel to toe) to ensure that everyone enjoys the same level of midsole compression and forward-feel.

The Gel Nimbus 19 does fit small and narrow, so you’ll definitely want to try a pair on for size. If you’re a fan of Asics shoes, have a narrow foot and don’t need a crazy amount of lateral support, the Gel Nimbus 19 is definitely worth a look and a try. It feels faster to run in than you’d think for a shoe with this much support and cushioning, making it a great longtraining option for lighter triathletes and a possible race shoe for heavier athletes competing in longer races.
