St. Andrews to host Olympic hopefuls at new Triathlon

July 6-7 in New Brunswick.

A small resort town in New Brunswick is about to make sporting history this July when it launches its first ever major Triathlon. Athletes are travelling from all over Canada to take part in what promises to be the most exciting sporting event in the province this summer.

Launched by Scott and Tressa Bevington, the TRI St. Andrews Triathlon event will be a multi-sport festival unlike any other. Taking place on July 6-7, the Triathlon weekend will include both the highly-anticipated Triathlon Canada Junior Elite Series Race and the TRI St. Andrews Triathlon.

“This race is like a dream come true for New Brunswick, says Daryl Steeves, long-time runner and Triathlon Coach with TRI St. Andrews. “To have St. Andrews as a venue is a bonus. This is going to be a world-class event.”

The Triathlon Canada Junior Elite Series race is one of only four races held across the country that provide Canada’s junior athletes with a highly competitive, draft-legal racing experience. Spectators will enjoy watching some of Canada’s future Olympic athletes, most notably Reid Burrows of Grand Bay-Westfield, New Brunswick.

“I am excited to have the unique opportunity to race at a National level so close to home,” says Burrows. “I know the race will have a deep field and will be well organized. I look forward to representing New Brunswick in my backyard.”

Along with the two Triathlons, the weekend will also feature a “Beat the Tide” race, a 5-mile race around historic Ministers Island at low tide. It will also feature a FREE kids run through the trails of Kingsbrae Garden, recently voted Canada’s Top Garden for 2013. Kingsbrae Garden is also a major sponsor of TRI St. Andrews. For non-racers visiting St. Andrews, there will also be a farmers market as well as variety of other seaside activities during the action-packed weekend.

The multi-sport weekend will wrap up Sunday evening with an awards party for the Triathlon participants and their families, sponsored by Moosehead Breweries. It will be a true Maritime party with Nova Scotia based band Shaydid, scheduled to perform.

“The entire town is supporting this event with many St. Andrews residents already signed up to volunteer,” says race organizer Scott Bevington. “The excitement is really building!”

So far, registrations have been submitted from as far away as Manitoba, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Quebec, Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland.

Registration is still open for all weekend events.
