World Triathlon Series set to kick off in Abu Dhabi on Saturday

Given that it’s an Olympic year, there’s extra anticipation surrounding the World Triathlon Series as the first cup race of the season kicks off on Saturday. Canada has five elite triathletes lining up to fight for their spot to Rio. They have been arriving in Abu Dhabi over the last few days to get acclimated in time for their race.

The International Triathlon Union announced this morning that the world’s fastest triathletes will be lining up in UAE for a chance to earn points for Rio. Among them, Abu Dhabi reigning champion Mario Mola looks to continue his winning streak. While world champion Gwen Jorgensen is sitting out of the season opener for the ITU Oceania CUP, runner-up Sarah True and compatriot Katie Zaferes help fill the women’s field with serious competition.

Abu Dhabi is the first Middle Eastern destination in the WTS. Last year they hosted a sprint distance race but this year it’s a standard distance that will take off from the Abu Dhabi Sailing and Yacht Club.

The race has spectator-friendly grandstands and the festivities take place over the whole weekend with a variety of races for all levels.

On Saturday, March 5th the elite men’s race starts at 1:06 PM GST. The women start at 4:06 GMT. Live coverage can be viewed here. The prize money is $150,000 USD.
