MultiSport Canada’s Recharge with Milk 2016 race series is in full swing, having kicked off with Woodstock a few weekends ago. This weekend, their Rose City Triathlon will celebrate it’s 10th year and first time at a new location, the Welland International Flatwater Center, also home of the popular Barrelman race. Upwards of 1,o00 participants are expected for the two-day event, which offers a “give-it-a-tri” and sprint distance race on Saturday, June 25th and a long course race on Sunday, June 26th.

Rose City has traditionally offered a half distance race but this year, the long course triathlon features a 2K swim, 56K bike and 15K run, a unique distance in between the Olympic and half distance making it a perfect tune-up race for longer distances later in the summer. There are also swim-bike and bike-run options in the sprint and long distance races.

This year, while the events are not yet sold out, MulitSport Canada has seen an increase in registration numbers and are sitting at just under 1,000 participants between the two days. Organizers expect a couple more hundred participants to sign up last minute, which has been common for the race.

“That’s what we’ve been getting the past two years, and I expect that will continue this year,” says chairman Ron Lemon. “Registration is definitely on the rise.”

While last year’s race weekend had a heat warning in effect, this year temperatures are supposed to be a better for racing. Currently, the forecast predicts 29 degrees and overcast with a chance of rain in the afternoon. According to MultiSport Canada’s website, water temperatures are hovering around 20 degrees and so it will be a wetsuit legal swim.

With the change of venue this year, the race is even more spectator friendly. Friends and family can watch the entire canal swim and almost the whole run from the grandstands around the basin.
