Two triathletes killed by drunk driver in Spain

On Sunday, two triathletes were killed and three others seriously injured after being struck by a drunk and drugged driver on Spain’s Costa Blanca. According to a story on road.cc, the driver was a 28-year-old woman who police have taken into custody.

The accident happened around 8:30 AM on Sunday morning, during a time when the cyclists, who were triathletes in the Club Atlètic Llebeig de Xàbia, would go for their weekly long ride. The most seriously injured athlete was air-lifted to a hospital in Valencia while the rest were transported to a local hospital.

The only cyclist to escape the incident without serious injury explained that the car had missed him “by centimetres” after he threw himself from his bike.

He said: “I was saved because I threw myself on the hard shoulder.AdTech Ad “Everything happened quickly. The six of us set out as we do on many Sundays, and we’d had a long, tranquil ride. Suddenly a car going at a considerable speed came past us. We had no time to react.”

The area is a popular cycling destination among British and local riders.
