Sunday’s fourth Welland Half Iron Triathlon

Nigel Gray is back for a hat trick win.

Toronto’s Nigel Gray returns to Welland to defend his Half Iron Triathlon title and looks to extend his winning streak to three in a row.

Local pro Wolfgang Guembel, winner of the inaugural race, will try to disrupt Gray’s plans for another victory. He will be joined by a number of Elite Age Groupers who compete in MultiSport Canada’s Triathlon Series for prize money.

St. George’s Angela Quick makes her Half Iron distance debut, and should lead all women out of the Welland Canal. She will have to be on her game during the bike and run to hold off veterans Cindy Lewis and Paolina Allan – who won in Welland in 2011.

Paratriathlete Robert Buren returns to better his 5:22:15 time from last year.

The race goes Sunday June 23, and includes events like the Half Iron Swim/Bike, and Half Iron Bike/Run. The Welland Half Iron Triathlon is designated at the Ontario Long Course Championship and is a qualifier for the 2014 Long Distance World Championship.
