This weekend in Gravenhurst features the 2016 Ontario Provincial International and Sprint Duathlon Championship.

In today’s opener, Waterloo’s Sean Delanghe and Orillia’s Jasmin Aggarwal both came from behind to take the overall victories in the Standard Distance Duathlon (10km Run, 40km Bike, 5km Run), earning the crown of Ontario Champions.

Toronto’s Charles Bedley led all runners after the relentlessly hilly opening 10 km with a 34:11 split, trailing him were Delange (35:06), then Lucan’s Matt Straatman (35:59). As Bedley fell off the pace during the 40 km bike, Straatman took full advantage and rode 1:03:34 to return first into T2. At the start of the final 5 km run, he led Delange by 41 seconds. But that would not be enough of a cushion to hold off the Chiropractor and former Wilfred Laurier University cross-country runner. Delange ran a race best 17:38 to pass Straatman to take the win in 1:59:05 and title of Ontario Champion. Straatman held firm for second (2:00:02), and Etobicoke’s Andrew McLeod finished third (2:02:15).

Laundry gets the Hat Trick, Summers takes her first

Guelph’s Jackson Laundry continued his MultiSport Canada winning streak, and Whitby’s Stephanie Summers finally took the overall win at the Gravenhurst Olympic Triathlon.

The men’s race featured battle between Laundry and Richmond Hill’s Andrew Bolton (Overall Winner at the Ontario Olympic Distance Triathlon Championship last weekend). Bolton shadowed Laundry during the 1.5 km swim – which starts with a jump off of the Muskoka Steamships, and the 40 km bike, until Laundry had an unfortunate incident with a car that took him off the road. After re-grouping and making some minor repairs to his bike, Laundry charged hard after Bolton to preserve his undefeated status. Bolton left T2, with a 2:02 lead, but a determined Laundry crushed the final 10 km run in 32:50 to earn his third win (1:58:15) in the MultiSport Canada Series – adding to his wins at Welland and Belwood. Bolton finished second, and Guelph’s Billy Bostad rode 1:03:56 to help him secure third (2:08:59).

Summers swam 27:40, biked 1:12:47, and ran 43:28 to stop the clock at 2:26:24. Waterloo’s Mamiko Noguchi was second (2:28:55), and Scarborough’s Rebecca Dolson third (2:30:10). On the 20 km bike, Straatman grabbed control of the race with the fastest ride of the day (31:19) and left T2 with a 29 second lead over Delanghe. Straatman ran the final 2.5 km in 8:59 to stay ahead of a fast charging Delanghe (8:43) to earn some revenge for yesterday and take the Ontario Sprint Duathlon Championship in 59:28. Delanghe was second (59:40), and Bracebridge’s Brian Moore (last year’s International and Sprint Duathlon Ontario Champion) finished third (1:00:59).
