Ironman 70.3 Canada has been added as the 96th race to the brand’s most popular race series. Whistler, BC has been selected as the host the inaugural race, held on July 24th in conjunction with Ironman Canada.

Ironman says that holding Ironman and Ironman 70.3 races on the same day and at the same venue has been historically successful Athletes appreciate the choice of race distances at one same great event.

Jeff Edwards, VP of Ironman’s North American Operations, explained the decision to grow the Ironman Canada race weekend. “As Ironman expands throughout Canada, there is a desire to allow a broader range of triathletes experience the beauty of the course in Whistler,” he says. “With the addition of Subaru Ironman 70.3 Canada, athletes with different athletic ambitions can challenge their own potential in this majestic landscape.”

The 70.3 course runs across the same terrain as the full distance race. The swim is a single loop in the beautiful Alta Lake with a lakeside transition before a one-loop bike course down through Callaghan Valley and up through Whistler on a spectator-lined highway. Runners follow a trail around Lost Lake and Green Lake and finish at Blackcomb Way.

The Resort Municipality of Whistler is excited about increased tourism prospects brought with the expansion. “The opportunity to showcase our region to athletes from around the globe fits perfectly with our year round outdoor lifestyle,” says Mike Furey, Chief Administrative Officer. “In three short years, Whistler has cemented itself as a premier triathlon destination. Adding Subaru Ironman 70.3 Canada allows even more athletes to experience this world class location.”

Registration opens on March 10th. This race offers 30 age group spots to the 2017 Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
