The Olympic qualification races on the WTS circuit may be over, but the series continues next month as it heads to England for ITU World Triathlon Leeds next month.

In time for the race, the Leeds City Council Leader and race organizers have made a big splash on the Yorkshire city’s centre with a piece of 3D, triathlon-inspired street art. The installation was unveiled exactly one month before the event, which takes place June 11th – 12th.

Artists from the art collective Media Gang were commissioned to create the installation, which lies in the city’s iconic Victoria Square shopping centre. The piece is inspired by the swim leg of the Leeds triathlon at Roundhay Park. The piece gives the illusion of athletes diving through the ground off the pontoon and disappearing into the water.

The installation is interactive and race organizers hope the public will stop to take a photo and get excited about the event.

Leeds City Councillor, Judith Blake, said “The excitement is building as Leeds gears up to welcome the very best triathletes in the world next month. June 12th is a not to be missed date for the diary and I know the residents of Leeds will be out in force to cheer on our Leeds-based athletes.

“This piece of street art looks very striking and captures the drama and excitement of the start of the race. Over the next three days this work of art will be a visitor attraction in its own right, so I would encourage as many people as possible to see it for themselves to get in the mood for the big day.”
