Canaqua Sports set to launch new season

The Canadian open water swim series has some big plans for next year following a successful 2017 season.

Coming off of a highly successful season in 2017 Canaqua Sports is working towards the 2018 season with great anticipation as it is looking at new events for both its Open Water Swim Series and its newest set of events, the Canaqua Sports SwimRun Challenge.

In looking at the 2017 season, Canaqua Sports saw considerable growth as it expanded to 10 open water swim events across Canada, and successfully launched its SwimRun Challenge with 2 events in Ontario. The company is looking at adding more races to its 2018 season in both of its series as it enters its 4th year of operation.

Canaqua Sports Open Water Swim Series

Open water swimming has seen a surge in popularity worldwide with new races opening up, and increased participation. The goal of the Canaqua Sports Open Water Swim Series is to focus on creating a Canadian brand to open water swimming thereby fostering the growth of the sport in Canada. Of the many races that are part of the series, Canaqua Sports has resurrected the St. Mary’s Quarry Swim after it was dormant for many years, helped bring back the Skaha Ultra Swim in Penticton B.C. and has run the Canadian Masters Open Water Swimming Championships which last year was at the Welland Canal Flatwater Centre, considered by many to be the premier location for open water competitions in Canada.

For 2018 Canaqua Sports is currently working on a number of new races as it continues to expand.

Canaqua Sports SwimRun Challenge

SwimRun is a unique event where participants complete numerous stages of alternating Swim and run distances. Races range is distance from 8k to 60k depending on the event. With it’s start in Sweden as an adventure event, SwimRun has grown in popularity in Europe, and is slowly moving into North America.

After two years of development, the Canaqua Sports SwimRun Challenge was launched in Sudbury Ontario this past July with a 19-km event, and again at the Welland Canal with the first of the 8.2 K lite distance.  The 2017 season was a trial year for the sport with many participants coming out of curiosity to see what it was like. Early indications suggest that this sport is here to stay. The Sudbury SwimRun Challenge will be running again on July 29, 2018, with a confirmation of the Welland date coming soon. Watch for a third Ontario event to come in 2018, and expansion into other areas of Canada to follow
